Frequently Asked Questions

Where does your salt come from?

All of our salt tiles, bricks, and lamps are sourced directly from the Khewra Salt Mine in Punjab, Pakistan — the world’s oldest and largest pink salt mine. Every piece is hand-selected, 98%+ pure sodium chloride with 84+ naturally occurring trace minerals, and shipped from our warehouse in Hanover, Maryland.

What’s the difference between salt tiles and salt bricks?

Tiles are 8” x 4” x 1” thick (2.9 lbs each) and are best for backlit feature walls and decorative installs where you want maximum light glow. Bricks are 8” x 4” x 2” thick and are heavier-duty — ideal for saunas, freestanding walls, and commercial builds that need more structural depth. Both cover the same wall area per piece.

Will every tile look the same?

No — and that’s the beauty of it. Himalayan salt is a natural crystal formed over 250 million years, so each piece has unique shades of pink, coral, peach, and orange with its own mineral veining. Your wall will be one of a kind.

Are your salt tiles safe for saunas?

Yes. Our tiles and bricks are heat-resistant up to 200°F and are widely used in saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga studios. For steam-heavy environments, proper ventilation is recommended (see maintenance below).

How many tiles do I need for my wall?

Each 8x4x1 tile covers 0.22 sq. ft., so you need roughly 45 tiles per 10 sq. ft. of wall. Use our Salt Wall Estimator on the homepage to get an exact count for your dimensions, or call us at (667) 417-8340 and we’ll calculate it for you.

Installation

Can I install a salt wall myself?

Yes — most residential salt walls are DIY-friendly. Tiles are installed with our Salt Adhesive directly onto a prepared surface, similar to laying standard tile. For large commercial walls or ceiling-height installs, we recommend a professional contractor.

What adhesive should I use?

Use our Salt Adhesive, formulated specifically for bonding salt to salt and salt to backer surfaces. Standard tile mortar and construction adhesives are not designed for salt and can fail over time.

Can salt walls be backlit?

Absolutely — that’s the signature look. Himalayan salt is semi-translucent, so LED strips or panels mounted behind the wall create a warm amber glow. Use low-heat LED lighting (not halogen or incandescent) behind the tiles.

What surface can I install salt tiles on?

Any dry, stable, vertical surface: cement board, plywood, drywall (with proper prep), or metal framing. Avoid installing directly onto surfaces exposed to water or high moisture without a vapor barrier.

Care & Maintenance

Will my salt wall melt or sweat?

Himalayan salt is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. In normal indoor humidity, this is not a problem. In very humid environments, tiles may feel slightly damp or develop light surface texture. Keeping the room ventilated, running the backlighting (gentle warmth keeps salt dry), or using a dehumidifier prevents this. Never install salt tiles outdoors or in direct contact with water.

How do I clean salt tiles?

Wipe gently with a dry or very slightly damp microfiber cloth. Never use water, sprays, or cleaning chemicals — salt is self-purifying and needs almost no maintenance.

How long does a salt wall last?

Decades, when installed indoors in a climate-controlled space. Salt doesn’t expire, fade, or degrade — the Khewra mine’s salt is 250 million years old.

Health & Wellness

What are the benefits of a salt wall?

Salt walls are prized for creating a calming, spa-like atmosphere. Many customers use them to support relaxation, ambient mood lighting, and a more refreshing indoor environment. They’re a staple of halotherapy rooms, spas, and wellness centers worldwide.

Note: Himalayan salt products are decorative wellness items and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Is Himalayan salt safe around pets and kids?

The tiles and walls are safe. Just discourage pets from licking installed walls or lamps regularly — excess salt intake isn’t good for animals.
